From Cromwell to the Great Famine

The name of Oliver Cromwell brings a shudder to many Irishmen. In 1649–50 the self-styled Lord Protector of England suppressed a rebellion in Ireland with the utmost ruthlessness, killing a third of Irish Catholics in the process. He settled many of his troops in Ireland on lands he had confiscated. Later, hopes that Charles II would restore these lands to their original owners proved forlorn.

After being deposed by the English, Charles’ son, the Catholic James II, attempted a comeback and landed in Ireland, where he was given a hearty welcome by the Catholic majority. The city of Londonderry, however, denied him entry when thirteen Protestant apprentice boys locked the gates in his face. James’ forces besieged the city for 107 days, but the inhabitants would not surrender. In the following year, 1690, the new king, William of Orange, defeated James at the Battle of the Boyne. The siege and the battle are commemorated every year by the Ulster Protestants.
